Awesome.

The first report of a zolpidem awakening came from South Africa, in 1999. A patient named Louis Viljoen, who, three years before, was declared vegetative after he was hit by a truck, had taken to clawing at his mattress during the night. Thinking he was suffering from insomnia, his family doctor suggested zolpidem to help him sleep. But 20 minutes after his mother ground the tablet up and fed it to him through a straw, Viljoen began to stir. His eyes, which normally wandered the room, vacant and unfocused, flickered with the light of consciousness. And then he began to talk (his first words were “Hello, Mummy”), and move (he could control his limbs and facial muscles). A few hours later he became unresponsive. But the next day, and for many days after that, zolpidem revived him, a few hours at a time.
Is there a spectrum between consciousness and unconsciousness? New research is casting doubt on our binary understanding of consciousness. Stories like the above demonstrate how ambien, a common sleeping pill, can wake the minimally-conscious to incredible effect. (via sciencecenter)

Harvard Food Plate Disses Milk.

Harvard disses milk

Harvard University nutritionists have decided to tweak the USDA’s new “My Plate” chart in a move that is sure to piss off the dairy industry.

In June, the USDA updated the old food pyramid and put out a healthy eating pie chart called “My Plate.”  The chart depicted a relatively positive diet but almost as an afterthought, tossed a glass of milk on the side urging eaters to have a glass with every meal.  The problem is that almost any reasonable nutritionist will tell you that a serving of dairy with every meal is far too much and Harvard nutritionists agree.

The Ivy League school decided to release their own My Plate which shows a glass of water in place of the milk.  They urge eaters to drink lots of water, tea, or coffee, and avoid sugary drinks while limiting their dairy. Their defense of such a non-traditional move was this:

“High intake [of dairy] can increase the risk of prostate cancer and possibly ovarian cancer.  Plus, dairy products can be high in saturated fat as well as retinal, which at high levels can paradoxically weaken bones.”

The human body is made of about 70% water so telling people to drink more of it does seem more important than telling them to drink more milk.

TAKE THAT, GLASS OF PUS. 10 points to Vegan(claw).

Mainstream US media outlets are ignoring the Occupy Wall Street protest today.

Al Jazeera isn’t. Keep up to date here.

If by “mainstream,” you mean The New York Times, CBS, CNN, and ABC, then, yeah, they’re totally ignoring it.

Though credit to Al Jazeera for being so good.

Update: 5:21PM: TPM just joined the coverage fray.

The major media outlets offer us nothing. Spread the info on this event through every possible alternative means.

New skeleton discovery may prompt shuffling of the story of human evolution
The 1.9 million-year-old fossil remnants of Australopithicus sebida in 2010 was already an important discovery. But a deeper analysis of the remains could hold a clue about the appearance of a direct human ancestor, bucking the previously held narrative. A. sebida is similar to humans and human ancestors in the anatomy of its feet, hands, brain and pelvis. While each similarity is not necessarily remarkable, all being present in the same species is highly unlikely to be a lucky convergence. The proposal that the new fossil is a direct ancestor to humans is a big one, dethroning several species that already claim the position. And if it is the case that A. sebida is a direct human ancestor, that has some important implications for how we thought humans evolved; the fossil belies the notion that our brains and our upright posture evolved in tandem, since A. sebida has a fully upright pelvis and yet a small brain.
Science has five open access papers coming out this month on the find, as well as a few news items on its website. Click here to read more.

If you’re hitting the road for the holiday weekend, you may want to drive west. Allstate released its annual report on the country’s best and worst drivers, and eight of the top 10 best cities are west of the Mississippi River.

This.

People on the east coast don’t have time for pussyfooting around, we have places to GO, GO, GO. On an unrelated note: we are assholes.

Argentina's big step towards true sexual equality

genderqueer:

cassket:

The 15 July last year was a historic day for equality in Latin America. Argentina was the first country in the region to legalise same-sex marriage. People took to the streets in celebration after a long vigil in front of congress. The law, sponsored by the government of the president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, was the result of a long and arduous campaign by LGBTQ organisations and allies against conservative sectors led by the Catholic church.

Although it has not drawn as many international headlines, 18 August 2011 was yet another historic day for equality. The Argentinian congress began the debates for a proposed gender identity law. If passed, this law would allow transgender people to correct their names and gender on all legal documents, including birth certificates, IDs and passports through a quick procedure.

According to first-hand accounts in local media, never before have there been so many trans activists in a congressional debate session. The debates have been set in motion by four different projects, each supported by a group of legislators and NGOs, each of them with a slightly different approach to providing a legal framework for identity issues that are currently addressed through court procedures that leave the final decision in the hands of judges and magistrates. The main differences between projects are based on healthcare services for those who wish to undertake hormone and/or surgeries as part of the transition processes.

If congress approves one of these four projects, the gender identity law would be another landmark in Argentina’s efforts for LGBTQ equality. This path was initiated in 2007, when, in a meeting sponsored by Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, the Yogyakarta Principles were launched as a global charter for gay rights at the United Nations human rights council. Due to resistance of several member states where homosexuality and gender identity are penalised, the principles have not yet been adopted worldwide. However, those initial accomplishments paved the way for Argentina’s deep social changes, which resulted in same sex marriage and could possibly grant trans people the right to recognition of their identities.

Argentinian LGBT Federation (FALGBT), together with ATTA (Asociación de Travestis, Transexuales y Transgéneros de Argentina), launched a media campaign to raise awareness of the proposed law and garner public support. The campaign, which includes videos and brochures, emphasises the recognition of gender identity without the need of medicalisation and the subsequent involvement of psychiatric or surgical procedures. Instead, their aim is the depathologisation of trans identities and the elimination of gender-related matters from the realm of psychiatry and the legal system. This campaign has also benefited from the recent high-profile case of Florencia Trinidad, a popular comedian who not only successfully exercised her right to identity through a verypublicised court case but also married her long-term partner and became a mother of twins through surrogacy last week.
